Here you can find out why the 30 NBA teams are so called:

Boston Celtics

I am one of the oldest clubs, founded in 1946, and have always remained faithful to the capital of Massachusetts. In that year, the then president and founder Walter Brown decided to continue with the Irish tradition in Boston. The city was full of emigrants originally from the land of St. Patrick and the result was a team with the green jersey as the meadows of Ireland and the name of the ancient inhabitants of the island.

Brooklyn Nets

Founded in 1967 initially as the New Jersey Americans, in 1968 they left New Jersey to go in Commack, Long Island becoming the New York Nets and then moved to Brooklyn in 2012. The back of the Brooklyn Nets logo is inspired by the typefaces written of the new York subway in 1957. the team's colors are white and black, and the new plant for the matches of the house is the Barclays Center.

New York Knicks

They too present since time immemorial (1946) owe their nickname to the ancient name given to Dutch settlers in the area, the Knickerbockers. This is because these same people wore the characteristic linked trousers above the knee called "knickers".

Philadelphia 76ers

They are old Syracuse Nats in 1963 were bought and brought into the city of brotherly love. The name obviously derives from the 1776 years of the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America.

Toronto Raptors

The first expansion outside of the US team to the area takes its name simply as a contest, "Name the Team", won by those who proposed the ancient dinosaur as a symbol of the team. Were born in 1995.

Chicago Bulls

You can easily think that the name comes from the large industry of this animal in the Illinois capital. Not so: the name comes from the fact that the former owner, Richard Klein, admired the bulls and was hoping to see the same strength and endurance of the cattle in his young deductible (1966).

Cleveland Cavaliers

In 1970, a Cleveland newspaper proposed a competition to win the opportunity to give the name to the franchise about to be born in Ohio. Cavaliers won those proposed (to honor the Knights eighteenth century) sometimes abbreviated as Cavs.

Detroit Pistons

Contrary to how you might think, the Motor City Connection - Ford - Pistons is wrong. The NBA champion team in 2004 but in fact was born in 1948 in Fort Wayne. Pistons were called from the beginning because their boss Fred Zollner was owner of a factory of pistons. In 1957 the team moved towards the capital of Michigan and the name Pistons with her.

Indiana Pacers

They keep the same name since 1967 by decision of the president that he hoped that his team held the pace of the top teams of the time. Pacers literally means "tread" and refers both to the tradition of trotting horse races at the famous Indianapolis 500.

Milwaukee Bucks

The name Bucks ( "deer") was an idea of R.D. original Trebilcox of Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin who proposed it in 1968 to the leadership. Won the comparison with other types Stags names, skunks and Stallion and the winner explained his decision by saying: "The deer is brave, a good jumper and is fast and agile."

Atlanta Hawks

The Hawks ( "Hawks") are the most vagabond team in the history of the League. I was born in 1948: at the time of the foundation, were the Tri-Cities Blackhawks; 3 Cities were Moline and Rock Island (both in Illinois) and Davenport (Iowa) and in 1831 between these three locations you fought the Blackhawk War. The name of the franchise derives from this battle in which the US army defeated severely Indians, led by Black Hawk. In 1951 they moved to Milwaukee, then in St. Louis from 1955 to 1968 to win a ring and only the 1968 arrived in the capital of Georgia, their current home.

Charlotte Hornets

The name was chosen through a contest that rewarded Hornets ( "Wasp"), among others finalists Gold and Knights. In 2002, the Hornets moved to New Orleans and was created the new team Charlotte Bobcats. In 2013, New Orleans Hornets changed their name to New Orleans Pelicans allowing Charlotte to resume his original name from the 2014/2015 season.

Miami Heat

The 2013 NBA champions also have to resort to a competition in 1987 that sees the end to win the Heat ( "hot") and the winner explained: "When you think of Miami, it is the heat that comes immediately to mind" .

Orlando Magic

The Orlando Sentinel newspaper sponsored a "Name the Team" challenge and the two terms "finalists" were Magic and Juice. Magic won, and this was the explanation given by GM Pat Williams: "Magic is a synonym for the Orlando area. We have the magical kingdom of DisneyWorld and our tourist motto is: Come where the magic is."

Washington Wizards

The franchise was born in Chicago in 1961 and was named the Packers, because of the shipping company of the president. In 1963 they moved to Baltimore and became the Bullets, that's because they played near a foundry that produced munitions during World War II. In 1973-74 after 10 years of Baltimore they moved into the district of the capital and became the Capitol Bullets. This until 1997, when the team owner Abe Pollin, decided to change the name into Wizards (ie the "wizards").

Dallas Mavericks

Founded in 1980 got its name thanks to a competition of a Dallas radio, he chose Mavericks thinking that the term would bring with it the "flavor" of Texas (maverick means "maverick" but also, by extension meaning, "independent person, individualistic, rebellious").

Houston Rockets

Born in 1967 as San Diego Rockets after three years moved to Texas, keeping their original name. It was in fact in the era of the "New Frontier" of Kennedy, or the space and its immensity. And what better city than Houston with all its spatial control centers for a team called "rockets"?

Memphis Grizzlies

As noted, their initial base was Vancouver, the other being the Canadian expansion team along with the Raptors. The origin of the name is very simple, being the grizzly bear (grizzly) an important element of the fauna of British Columbia. He has kept the same name after the transfer in 2001 Tennessee.

New Orleans Pelicans

Founded in 1988 as the Charlotte Hornets in 2002 the team moved to New Orleans becoming the New Orleans Hornets. In 2005 they asked hospitality to Oklahoma City after Hurricane Katrina (hence the name New Orleans / Oklahoma City Hornets) and finally in April of 2013 as a result of the change of ownership become the New Orleans Pelicans. The new owner wanted to look for a name linked to the territory and the pelican is the very symbol of Louisiana.

San Antonio Spurs

As for the Dallas Mavericks their name was chosen in a contest and won because much reflected the soul of Texas and San Antonio. The "spurs" play in the shadow the Alamo since 1973 and their city is indeed famous for the famous rodeos.

Denver Nuggets

Upon their arrival they called the NBA Denver Rockets but, as seen before, there was already a Houston team to be called so. Then they chose the name Nuggets ( "nuggets"), very appropriate for an area so rich in gold mines like Colorado.

Minnesota Timberwolves

As with many other exemptions was a contest to decide the name of the Minneapolis team. They reached 6,000 ideas, but in the final remained Timberwolves ( "Wolves") and Bears ( "bears"). The first option was easily the best, and because the wolf is a local animal, and because no other sports team that was the name.

Portland Trail Blazers

The "frontrunners" (literally "plotters of paths", popular in the Oregon forests) chose the name through a contest held in Portland in 1970 (one of the names proposed Pioneers but was found to be already used by a team of a universities).

Oklahoma City Thunder

They were born in 1967 as the Seattle SuperSonics, but in 2008 the owner Clayton Bennett decided to move to Oklahoma City does not, however, acquiring the name, logo and colors in Seattle to leave the possibility of a new future NBA franchise. The team colors are orange, blue and white. The name Thunder ( "Thunder") was chosen because Oklahoma is frequently hit by violent storms.

Utah Jazz

In 1979, when the team arrived in the mountains of Utah from New Orleans brought with her logo and colors, keeping the name Jazz, clearly the musical genre developed in the city of Louisiana.

Golden State Warriors

They are the descendants of the ancient Philapelphia Warriors, who moved to San Francisco in 1962. In 1971 there was the final move across the bay and was renamed the Golden State Warriors, having been the California is a land of mines and hunt for gold.

Los Angeles Clippers

When in 1971 the San Diego Rockets went to Houston left the Californian city without basketball for seven years, until the arrival of the Braves from Buffalo. The owners, however, were not happy with the name and changed it to Clippers ( "sailing"). Once they were in fact many huge sailing ships that were standing in the port of San Diego. In 1984 when the team moved to Los Angeles she puts her behind the term, although there is doubt that a few tall ship ever anchored to the City of Angels.

Los Angeles Lakers

True Crime in the city of Los Angeles is the sea, not the lake. Too bad that the Lakers got there only in 1960, after 13 years of militancy in Minneapolis, where he was chosen Lakers. The name "lake" makes much more sense in Minnesota, the "state of 10,000 lakes", but it was decided to keep at L.A.

Phoenix Suns

In 1968 the new Arizona franchise made a competition to find a name for the newly formed team. He won the term Suns ( "Alone") an appropriate term because at Phoenix there are 330 sunny days a year; the name appeared on the other type Rattlers, Thunderbirds, Wranglers, Mavericks, Tumbleweeds, Mustangs and Cougars.

Sacramento Kings

Their ancestors were the Rochester Royals, who moved first to Cincinnati, then to Kansas City. Here in 1972 but had to change its name because a local baseball team was already using the term Royals. It was decided to remain on the blue-blooded names and in 1975 they finally chose the term Kings ( "king"). Term that was brought to Sacramento in 1985 with the team and who still identifies the basketball in the capital of California.
